Sobre mi

About me  /  Sobre mi

Gerard was born in 1982 in Palafrugell, Catalonia, where he lived until he was 18 years old. He was surrounded by a creative family with artistic sensitivity, coming from an inspiring and authentic place: l’Empordà – land of great artists and writers.

Later he moved to Barcelona to study Technical Engineering and a postgraduate program. This was his first contact with the city, which would finally influence him and be the protagonist and source of inspiration of his work. The admiration he felt for its streets, people, history and cultural and urban richness is evident and it is reflected on his works.

When he was 26, his creative and artistic phase started in a self-taught way, discovering his greatest passions, painting and photography. In a first stage, which could be qualified as experimental and introspective, he focused on abstraction and matter, inspired and influenced by great Catalonian artists as Tàpies and Guinovart.

In 2009 he incorporated photography in his work, discipline which he would use to express his feelings on everyday and urban life. His works became in a space where daily scenes, characters and urban symbology – such as graffiti and bikes – were gathered. These are recurrent elements, which have a special and main role in his work.
Captivated by his city, Barcelona, he used to go down the streets capturing its essence and people passing through, as both Xavier Miserachs and Català-Roca did in their own style, photographers with who Gerard identifies himself.

His trips also were a source of inspiration; some of his monographs are dedicated to them, such as Paris with its urban art, the country lifestyle in areas of Arequipa, Puno and Cuzco (Peru) and also l’Empordà, his home land.

Gerard uses to work with mixed techniques, mainly photographic bases which intervene and complements with painting, sprays and varnishes, providing the image with a unique texture and perspective of the scene. He uses lively and saturated colours with a contemporary style, or just black & white images with a more minimalistic concept. In short, his works are a reflection of his personal vision of reality and his admiration at everyday and urban life.
